Fred D. Mason, Jr. a member of the American Federation of Teachers Local 8018 with nearly 40 years of labor and social justice activism, was elected President of the Maryland State and District of Columbia, AFL-CIO in October 2001; he is currently serving his third term.

Donna S. Edwards, a trailblazer and pioneer for women during thirty years of union and community activism, is the first woman to be elected Secretary-Treasurer of the Maryland State and D.C. AFL-CIO.
